Requirements to undergo Pre-TB screening for UK travelers

Procedures followed depend on the age of the applicant:Â
>For those below 11:
- A thorough evaluation that includes History and physical exam only, if clinically suspicious of TB the client will be required to undergo sputum analysis to rule out active TB
- Once TB is cleared the client will be given an official Certificate validating the clearance, the expiry date depends on whether the client had had a Sputum examination for clearance, in which case the expiry date will be 3 months from the issue of the official certificate, on the other hand, if the client was cleared from the outset, the expiry date will be until 6 months from the date of evaluation.
- In cases where the sputum exam shows active TB, following the drug sensitivity test, the patient will be required to finish a full course of anti-TB medication. After that, a final sputum exam will be done to check remission following treatment. Once remission is confirmed, the patient will be given a clearance certificate with a 3-month expiry date.
>For those 11 and above:
- In addition to a thorough evaluation, a chest x-ray will be done as part of TB screening, if clinically suspicious of TB or if the Chest x-ray shows signs of TB, the client will be required to undergo Sputum analysis to rule out active TB
- Once TB is cleared, the client will be given an official Certificate validating the clearance. The expiry date depends on whether the client had a Sputum examination for clearance, in which case it will be 3 months from the issue of the official certificate. On the other hand, if the client was cleared from the outset, it will be 6 months from the date of evaluation.

NB- Pregnant women will be given the below options when deciding on a Chest x-ray
- Option 1 (proceeding with the chest x-ray): - After consent, double protection with a shield covering the abdomen when doing the chest x-ray.
- Option 2 (Delaying the chest X-ray):- The pregnant lady will be given the option to delay the chest X-ray until after delivery.
- Option 3 (Sputum exam):- Other than a chest x-ray, the pregnant applicant will be given the option to go directly through sputum analysis to rule out active TB.
