Requirements to undergo TB screening for UK travelers

Procedures followed depend on the age of the applicant:Â
>For those below 11:
- A thorough evaluation that includes History and physical exam will be conducted. If clinically suspicious of TB, the client will be required to undergo sputum analysis to rule out active TB infection.
- Once TB is cleared, the client will be given an official certificate validating the clearance. If the client had a sputum examination for clearance, the expiry date of the certificate will be 3 months from the date of issue. If the client was cleared without a sputum test, the expiry date will be 6 months from the evaluation date.
- In cases where the sputum exam shows active TB, the patient will be required to finish a full course of anti-TB medication following a drug sensitivity test. A final sputum exam will be done to check remission following treatment. Once remission is confirmed, the patient will be given a clearance certificate with a 3-month expiry date.
>For those 11 and above:

If clinically suspicious of TB or if the Chest x-ray shows signs of TB, the client will be required to undergo sputum analysis to rule out active TB infection.
- Once TB is cleared, the client will be given an official certificate validating the clearance. If the client had a sputum examination for clearance, the expiry date of the certificate will be 3 months from the date of issue. If the client was cleared without a sputum test, the expiry date will be 6 months from the evaluation date.

NB- Pregnant women will be given the following options when deciding on a Chest x-ray
- Option 1 (proceeding with the chest x-ray): - After consent, double protection with a shield covering the abdomen when doing the chest x-ray.
- Option 2 (Delaying the chest X-ray):- The pregnant woman will be given the option to delay the chest X-ray until after delivery.
- Option 3 (Sputum exam):- Other than a chest x-ray, the pregnant woman will be given the option to go directly through sputum analysis to rule out active TB.
